About Us

Background

UC CubeCats is a student-led, undergradutate research lab founded in 2015 within the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics (AEEM) at UC's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). Our primary goal is to provide students a team-based opportunity to positively impact the scientific community and the University of Cincinnati, as well as advance their professional careers through education and experience in spacecraft development. Members of our organization can gain experience designing, building, and operating flightworthy aerospace systems (specifically CubeSats and High-Altitude Balloons), network with industry professionals through conferences and collaborations, and apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-world projects.

Organizational Structure

Our organization has two primary programs. The CubeSat Program is the main focus of our organization, and includes our two current CubeSat missions as well as several side projects supporting these missions. The CubeCats Applied Training in Space Exploration, or CATiSE, Program is our orientation for new members and freshman, helping them learn about the engineering design process and many of the other fundamentals needed to work on CubeSats or other spacecraft missions.

Open Source

Our work is intended be useful to the entire smallsat community, especially new groups just getting into developing their own CubeSat missions. As such all the software, designs, and schematics created for our projects are or will be open source. Check out our organization's GitHub page, which contains our currently released projects. (Note that many of these projects are still works in progress, and that not all of our work has been uploaded yet.) We also hope to eventually put into writing the various lessons we have learned over the years.

How to Join

Join our organisation and become part of some cool space projects!

UC CubeCats is looking for UC students who have an interest in software development, electronics, design, analysis, and systems engineering for small satellite missions. Although we are a predominantly an undergraduate, aerospace engineering organization, we accept university students of every level (graduate and undergraduate) and every major who are willing to be involved. The nature of most of our projects makes interdisiplinary work essential, including potential opportunities for non-engineering students.

If you are interested in joining our organization:

  • Come to one of our public meetings (see our Calendar for information). At the beginning of each Fall semester, we usually hold a informational meeting to explain our work and how to get involved. During semesters, we usually hold a general meeting every Sunday at noon, (except holiday weekends), which are also a good opprotunity to learn more.
  • Contact us online to find out more. Tell us your interest in joining CubeCats, any relevant past experience or skills, and what you might be interested in working on for CubeCats.
